Many parents (including me!) have used infant sleep machines as white noise to calm and soothe. A study published in Pediatrics in March 2014 concludes that Infant Sleep Machines are “capable of producing output sound pressure levels that may be damaging to infant hearing and auditory development.”
Alternatives to an Infant Sleep Machine include an oscillating fan or air purifier. These make a soft, relaxing noise and also help to circulate the air in your baby’s room. If using an oscillating fan or air purifier, position the device so it does not blow air directly on your baby.
